1 stick butter

1 cup flour

Ice water (Water with ice cubes)

1 tbs sugar

1 pinch salt

For The Filling -

3 apples

“Something Sweet”

Zest of Half a Lemon

Supplies Needed:
Dry Measuring Cup

Measuring Spoons

Mixing Spoon

2 Mixing Bowls

Microplane/Grater/Zester

Chef’s Knife/Sharp Knife

Rolling Pin (Wrap a wine bottle in plastic wrap if you don’t have - be creative!)

Sheet Pan

The Process:
Start off by making the crust. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 stick of cold butter (cut into cubes) with 1 cup of flour. Use your hands to mix. Add a pinch of salt and 1tbs sugar. Sprinkle in cold ice water, enough to bind the dough, combining with your fingers until the dough forms a ball. The dough should be moist, but not sticky. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 10-15 minutes.

While the crust is in the refrigerator, thinly slice 3 apples and toss them in “Something Sweet” (add as much to your liking) with grated lemon zest. You want the apples to be coated with “Something Sweet,” so feel free to do a taste test.

Take dough out of the refrigerator and place on a lightly floured surface (countertop). Lightly flour your rolling pin and roll out dough flat, trying to maintain a circular shape. It does not have to be perfect - from the photos above, the crust has a “rustic” appearance.

Layer apples In circular pattern from inside out, with about 2-3in of crust uncovered. (For any remaining apples/apples that can’t fit, you have a snack to enjoy!) Fold uncovered crust over apples. Put a few cubes of butter on top. Brush crust with egg wash (1 egg beaten with water) which will give the crust a nice golden brown sheen.

Bake on 400 degrees until browned. About 15 to 20 min., but keep a watch on it - this cooks quickly.

Sprinkle with more “Something Sweet” once it comes out the oven.

Enjoy with a nice scoop of ice cream!
